Hedgehogs F2

To Hedgehogs!

We are the happy, helpful Hedgehogs and we try our best in everything we do! Our class teacher is Miss Smith and our teaching assistant is Mrs Martin.

Our topics this Summer term are:

What grows on a farm?

and

Would you see a kangaroo on Bull Farm?

During the first half term we will be learning all about what grows on the farm. We will go on the minibus and visit B & Q to buy resources to grow seeds and grow these in the courtyard. We will also hatch chicks in our incubator and have a visit from a local petting zoo. In the second half term we will be comparing our locality with Australia. We will share stories about Australian animals and learn facts about the country and its animals. We will be looking and creating our own style of aboriginal artwork for our school art exhibition. To finish our theme will be having an ‘Australian Beach Day’ so we hope to see you there!

Over the term we will be covering all of the seven Foundation Stage Areas of learning.

Communication and Language

We will rehearse and speak in front of others, asking questions and sharing our own knowledge and ideas. We will also be talking about, justifying our opinions, and listening to the opinions of others.

Physical Development

This term we will be practicing a variety of different skills for example throwing, catching, kicking and balancing. We will be finding out what we are good at and what we could improve on and practising for sports day. We will be participating in team games and putting their skills into practise. We will also carry out many different motor skill activities including, threading, using tweezers and cutting out shapes.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We will be working collaboratively with others to solve problems and share ideas. We will reinforce the golden rules and will be working hard to follow the rules as a class. We will also be thinking about how to care for animals and look after the baby chicks.

Literacy

We will be looking in depth at our shared stories and will make story maps to help us when retelling them. We will use non-fiction books and the internet to find out information. There will also be e a variety of shared and independent reading and writing activities as well phonics lessons. We will be sharing the story of ‘The Odd Egg,’ ‘Jack and the Beanstalk,’ ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk’ and ‘The Enormous Turnip.’

Maths

We will continue to practice our counting skills by singing songs and playing number games and joining in with our daily ‘Cool Count’. We will be making sets and counting carefully 1:1. We will be exploring shape, space and measures.

Understanding of the World

In the first part of the term we will be looking at our local environment and the changes which happen in spring. We will also be learning about farms, growing and baby animals. In the second half of the term children will be comparing our locality with Australia and thinking about the similarities and differences. We will look at the globes and find Australia, learn facts about Australian animals and decide if a kangaroo really would live on Bull farm.

Expressive and Creative Development

Over the term we will take part in lots of different creative activities. We will be having lots of fun painting, modelling, sticking and creating and generally getting messy. We will be looking closely at objects and draw them using different media and materials. We will be looking at examples of aboriginal art work and create our own. We will take part in role play to act out the stories we hear and we will learn different songs and add instruments to them. We will be working together to create a dance and to retell a story to perform to others.
