Welcome to Kangaroos!


We are in Year 1!
Our Teacher is Miss Gregory and our Teaching Assistants are

Mrs Maskery and Mrs Brewer (who job share).

  We are looking forward to another exciting term - Summer term 2017

Our Topic this term is:
Theme: "Would Beauty and the Beast like to live in Warwick Castle?"


We will be having a VISIT to Warwick Castle on Thursday 8th June 2017.


Our Theme Day will be themed around living in a castle.


Maths is lots of fun in Kangaroos! 

Counting, Number and Place Value, Securing Number Facts, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division and Measurement and Geometry will all be taught this term.          



This term we will be focussing on non-fiction writing about the castles, reports, descriptions and stories based on Traditional Tales, plus continuing to use     our Rainbow Grammar.                      


Throughout the Summer term in Science, our focus will be 

taking care of ourselves and understanding our body (SRE), plus identifying, classifying and grouping animals.        


Art and D.T
         Our creative work will focus on:        

Investigating the artist Paul Klee and creating castle art from 2d shapes.  In DT we will be designing, making and evaluating a Castle with a working drawbridge and moving knights!


In music this term our focus will be
Music Express "Story Time".



In P.E our focus this term will be REAL PE skills and Multi skills external coaching.

P.E is on Tuesday and Thursday. Please remember to bring your P.E kit - shorts, T-shirt and pumps/trainers.

In R.E we will be learning about Christian and Jewish Symbols.



Remember to read every night and get your diary signed - you will earn a star stamp each time!

We read everyday in school so you will need your reading book and reading diary with you every day.

Also, have a go at reading a book using your BUG CLUB account!




            KS1 school circle time focussing upon current issues. 


  Written homework will be given out on a
FRIDAY and collected in the following FRIDAY so that it can be marked and new homework given.  Please encourage and help your child to complete their homework. Regular READING at home and weekly SPELLINGS are also part of homework. 


There is also a home task given on FRONTER each week.

THANKYOU for your support, it really does make a HUGE difference to your child's learning. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT READING AND SPELLING ARE ALSO PART OF HOMEWORK.

Spelling Quiz
We also have a
Friday spelling/phonics quiz and it would be really helpful if you could support your child in practising their weekly spellings.  Please make sure your child has their reading diary with them and practise spellings every day using look cover write check.



We will be focussing on E safety, creating and debugging simple programs,stop animation using i pads.

There are lots of exciting activities on Fronter that can help your child progress with their learning.  Even just 5 minutes a day on the maths, reading and spelling games could make a massive difference to your child's attainment.




This term our focus will be UK map work, and creating a map of a castle.





Learning why and how castles were built, who lived in a castle and what castle life was like.



We are going to have an extremely busy and hard working term but I'm sure it will be lots of FUN!

Children in Year 1 across the country take part in a Phonics Screening in June. They have to read 40 words (20 real words and 20 “alien” words). You can help your child by practising on

PE, RE and Music

Every Tuesday afternoon Mrs Maskery will be teaching Kangaroos, they will be focussing on Music, PE and RE.


PE days are Tuesday and Thursday.
Please remember to have your full PE kit in school and remember to REMOVE EARRINGS - Thank you.

SPELLINGS will be given out on Friday ready for a quiz the following Friday. How many star stamps can you earn by learning them?

Remember to practise your maths targets and tables using our super Maths Room on Fronter and Mathletics and earn lots of star stamps!

Extra bits!...



Your child will continue to receive a free piece of fruit every day.

Children are also able to bring in 20p a day to spend on a healthy snack at the Tuck Shop, or you can send a healthy snack from sweets, chocolate or crisps please.

 Please read at home regularly... We give out lots of star stamps for reading at home!
