Welcome to Polar bears' class page!

Year 2


 Mrs Smith is the teacher in Polar Bears and Mrs Hawkins and Mrs Senior are the teaching assistants.  If you have any questions, pop in and catch one of us! 


Our topic for the Spring term is

 "Who was the greatest explorer?

(Neil Armstrong or Christopher Columbus)?’





This term's daily reads are:

Daily reads spring 1 : Rainbow Fish, Snail and the whale, Christopher Columbus (NF), Commotion in the ocean & The story of Christopher Columbus

Daily reads spring 2: Living in space (NF), Whatever Next, Dr Xargle, Shine moon shine & How to catch a star


In English we will be writing stories,  based on ’The Mouse hole Cat’ by Antonia Barber and Alien Landing by Pie Corbett Our Rainbow Grammar work will focus on using simple, compound and complex sentences, questions, statements and exclamations; as well as identifying word classes and of course spelling!  We will be finding out lots about Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus and writing information reports and diary writing.


In reading, we will continue to work on decoding and reading with speed and accuracy. We will also be focussing upon asking and answering questions about a text and we will complete some SATS practice papers.  Try to read at least 3 times a week with an adult and talk about what you have read. Remember to get your diary signed!


In Science, will complete observations of seasonal change throughout the Year. Our main learning will be looking at different materials and their properties.       




In maths we are learning lots this term!

Cool Count: 2, 5 and 10 times tables and related division facts.

The main part of our lessons will focus on Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. We will be using a concrete, pictorial, abstract approach and will use a wide variety of representations and methods – this will help us to Master Maths!  We will also be looking at money, fractions and statistics.

  We will also be completing some SATS practice papers.




In computing, throughout the term, we will focus upon E safety, using word programme and algorithms.





PE day is Thursday and we will be working on multi skills and dance.  Please remember to bring a white or red t-shirt, red or black shorts and pumps or trainers.  Remove earrings before school if possible.



Homework is given out on a Friday and collected in the following Friday. Don't forget to practice your spellings ready for our spelling quiz every Friday!



Remember to read at home as much as you can, and get your diary signed.  Each time you get your diary signed you will be able to move up the reading ladder and when you reach the top (10 reads) you will receive a small treat!
