Dolphins' Class Spring Term

Mrs Harrison is the Class Teacher in Dolphins. Mrs Harrison really enjoys sharing stories and going on adventures. For the Spring Term, Mrs Harrison is really looking forward to our trip to Lincoln Castle. Miss Richards is a teaching assistant in Year 1. She loves to read and spend time with her dog Frank. Miss Richards enjoys teaching phonics and working with the children. Additionally, Mrs Wilson is a Teaching Assistant working in Turtles and Dolphins. She enjoys going for long walks, live music and being at the seaside. Mrs Wilson is looking forward to working with all the lovely year 1 children this year. Lucky Dolphins also get Mrs Hawkins. Mrs Hawkins works in Dolphins, Turtles and Penguins Class. Mrs Hawkins really enjoys teaching RSHE, Music, Maths and reading stories. In her spare time, Mrs Hawkins loves to spend time with her family and go on lovely long walks with Mr Hawkins.
PE in Dolphins is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Continuous Provision
In Year 1, our children have access to continuous provision. Continuous provision describes the different areas around the classroom which are readily available for our children to use on a daily basis. Our children have access to the following areas: writing, maths, reading, creative, construction, small world, home corner, fine motor, sand and water. Throughout their school day, our children have the opportunities to explore a range of resources as well as engage with enhancements that have been carefully planned by our Year 1 teachers. Our continuous provision will help our children embed concepts and learn new skills whilst challenging their thinking across our Crescent curriculum.
Writing
Our children will begin their Spring Term writing journey by exploring the book 'Grandpa's Gift' by Fiona Lumbers. We will be working on combining words to make sentences, leaving spaces between words, using capital letters and full stops and the use the capital letters for the names of people and the personal pronoun 'I'. We will explore this text through pathways and drawing club approaches.
We will finish the Spring Term by using the book 'Beegu' by Alexis Deacon to inspire our writing. We will use all our writing skills to begin to write our own version of the story.
History
In our exciting history topic, we will be learning all about Kings and Queens and where they lived. We will begin by thinking about how we learn about the past and will consider why royalty had castles built. The children will explore the lives of Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Victoria and King William I. We are all very excited about our trip to Lincoln Castle this term!
Geography - Fieldwork
Our school grounds, will be the focus of our geography fieldwork. We will look at the plants around school and think about how we can encourage plants to grow in our school grounds.
Maths
Maths in the Spring Term will see us learning about place value up to 20 and then to 50. We will use practical resources to add and subtract within 20. Furthermore, we will investigate length, height, mass and volume within our measurements units.
Art and Design and Technology
In art, the children will learn all about self-portraits. We will investigate famous self-portraits and use collage and clay to create our own. Additionally, we will investigate different types of sketching, such as using short, light lines. 
DT will see us constructing a windmill. They will think about creating stable structures, consider ways to make and attach the sails, finishing with evaluating their work.
Computing
In the Spring Term, we will be focused on programming. Our first unit 'Animations', will see us exploring the way a project looks by investigating sprites and backgrounds. We will use programming blocks to use, modify, and create programs. Additionally, children will also be introduced to the early stages of program design through the introduction of algorithms. Our second unit, will use Scratch Jr to gain a better understanding of algorithms including sequencing and debugging.

PE

Dolphins will be practising the skills of throwing and catching and travelling with and passing a ball. The children will be throwing underarm and overarm and catching and bouncing a ball. Additionally, the children will travel with the ball forwards and backwards and use kicking skills within a game. In the second half of the term, the focus will be attacking and defending and striking and hitting a ball. When attacking and defending, we will learn about marking a player and running at different speeds. The children will also practice basic sending and receiving.
Relationships, Sex and Health Education
Our No Outsiders books in the Spring Term help us with finding ways to play together and being
proud of ourselves! Additionally, we will consider special people in our lives and the importance of families. E-safety is important to us even in Year 1. We will explore the importance of asking for permission before going online and why it's important to always be kind - including online.
Science
Our two science topics for the Spring Term are Naming and Describing Materials and Properties and
Uses of Materials. Within our first unit, we will distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made. The children will investigate and identify and name a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water and rock. When we move onto our Properties and Uses of Materials we will revisit distinguishing between an object and the material from which it is made before we begin to describe the physical properties of a variety of everyday materials. Finally, we will compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of their simple physical properties.
The Sprint Term will also see us revisit our Seasonal Changes unit where we will investigate the different birds and flowers we see in Spring.
Music
Music is made up of high and low sounds, long and short sounds, and loud and quiet sounds. The children will explore these sounds and create their own very simple melodies. In the second half of the Spring Term, Learning to Listen will be the focus. Listening is very important. Our children will learn to listen with their eyes as well as ears and how they can also feel sound in their body.
RE
In RE, we will begin by thinking about
'Myself and Caring for Others'. The children will explore the idea of belonging. They will identify the values of kindness and care and think about these values in religious stories. Additionally, we will consider 'Beliefs and Teachings' focusing on the stories of healing the 10 lepers and feeding the 5000, Finally, we will explore why Christians celebrate Easter.
