Cheetahs Y5

We are the Cheeky Cheetahs.

Miss Beighton is our class teacher and Mrs Hawkins is our teaching assistant.

We are so excited to be in Year 5 and are looking forward to a busy but brilliant Autumn Term.

Was the Industrial Revolution a Victorian Blessing or a Victorian Curse?

Our Spring topic revolves around the Victorian era of history and specifically focuses on the events of the industrial revolution. Through examining a range of sources, we will consider the events of the revolution, how it began and most crucially begin to use our historical enquiry skills to consider whether it really was an entirely good change to the world.

A lot of our English writing and reading this term will be inspired by our topic. We’ll be revisiting lots of different skills and learning some more throughout lots of engaging pieces of writing including instructional writing, newspaper reports, poetry and a non-chronological report.

As we have made the jump to upper Key Stage 2 it’s important that our expectations and level of challenge have increased too. We will be using a wide range of texts to develop retrieval, inference and prediction skills with a huge focus on vocabulary. To compliment our topic, we will be reading the wonderful ‘Cogheart’ by Peter Bunzl. Have a look at this video to hear Peter Bunzl’s own introduction to the story!

We love maths in year 5! We will continue to build on the foundations of place value, addition and subtraction from the beginning of the year through problem solving and a development of quick recall arithmetic skills. We will also continue to work through our multiplication and division topic as well as applying our skills to fractions, decimals and percentages later in the term.

This term we will be exploring the ‘Earth and Beyond’ in our topic all about the Earth and its place in the universe. In Spring 2 we will move on to ‘Feel the Force’ which is all about exploring the different forces that act on us all the time as well as considering how we can use force to help us in the form of levers and pulleys. We will be focusing on using our scientific enquiry skills throughout, asking/answering questions and consolidating our growing understanding of scientific principles.

As well as being reminded of the importance of e-safety online we will continue to work on our digital literacy and using some exciting apps to create videos to describe our topic to a wider audience.

Art and DT

We are very excited about our Art/DT project this half term. We will begin by learning about the style of William Morris and developing our own drawing and painting techniques. Towards Easter we will take our DT inspiration from the mechanimals of ‘Cogheart’ as we will be designing, making and evaluating our own simple mechanical toys. I can’t wait to see how year 5 get on!

In Spring 2 we will be using the RE skills developed in our Autumn Term Bible Explorers workshops to answer some big questions and consider how religious beliefs are expressed in different ways all around the world.

This term we are going to be focusing on to be learning the rules, skills and tactics needed to play Hockey and football with the fantastic Mr Saleh! Our PE days will be Monday and Tuesday this term.

Weekly homework and spellings will always be on Seesaw. Please encourage your child to practise their spellings, complete their homework and read at least 3 times a week in line with our home/school agreement.
