Our topics this Autumn term are:

The World Around Me

and

Celebrations

During the first half term we will be learning about different animals, including hedgehogs, and we will support the children to become more confident in their new classroom environment. We will also be sharing lots of different stories and talking about our likes and dislikes.  In the second half term we will be learning about and exploring different celebrations around the world. We will be sharing our own experiences and will begin to tell our own stories.

Over the term we will be covering all of the seven Foundation Stage Areas of learning.

Communication and Language

We will rehearse and speak in front of others, listen to others' ideas and share our own knowledge and ideas with our peers and our families. We will also be telling our own stories and acting them out.

Physical Development

This term we will be practicing a variety of skills, for example threading and cutting, to develop our fine motor skills. We will also take part in weekly PE lessons to develop our gross motor skills, including balancing, coordination and travelling in different ways.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We will be supporting the children to become more confident in their new learning environment and will encourage children to share their own ideas with their peers and their families. We will be exploring what it means to be a good friend and use 'The Colour Monster' story to begin to identify our own emotions. We will also learn about the cultures and beliefs of others.

Literacy

We will be looking in depth at our shared stories and will practise joining in with the repeated refrains in the books. We will predict the endings to the stories and begin to identify the front cover and its features. We will also be using a variety of materials to practise making marks and give meaning to them. Some of the stories we will be sharing this term are: A House for Hedgehog, We're Going on a Bear Hunt, The Cave and The Gingerbread Man.

Maths

We will practise our counting skills through our ‘Cool Count’, which includes counting forwards and recognising numbers. We will be practising making sets and making comparisons between two groups of objects, saying which group has more or less. We will be participating in shape, space and measures activities, including using 2D shapes to make pictures and using scales to weigh objects.

Understanding the World

In the first part of the term, we will be learning about animals and our environment, thinking about how we can look after them, and we will begin to observe some of the changes that happen in the environment over Autumn. In the second half term, we will be learning about different festivals and celebrations, including Halloween, Diwali and Christmas, and we will be exploring how they are celebrated around the world.

Expressive and Creative Development

Over the term, we will be using a variety of techniques and equipment to make different models and pictures. We will be learning about colours and begin to explore the effects of mixing colours together. We will also be creating our own stories and acting them out with our peers.
