Leopards Y4

Welcome to Leopards!

Year 4

Miss McBride is the class teacher and Mrs Brewer is our fabulous teaching assistant.

We are all looking forward to a really exciting Autumn Term.

During this term, we will attempt to answer the question

'What did the Ancient Egyptians achieve?'

Our English work in the first half term will be based around the narrative ‘The Egyptian Cinderella.' We will use Talk for Writing to help us write a character description and some narrative too. During the second half term, our focus will be on non-fiction writing. We will be applying our knowledge of the Ancient Egyptians to write mummification instructions and non-chronological reports. We will have a strong focus on handwriting, grammar, punctuation and spelling throughout the term.

In Guided Reading, we will be focusing on developing our reading skills and linking this with answering questions about a text. We will also be developing our inference skills - using clues to help us answer questions.

Our class book will be Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carroll.

This term, we will be focusing on place value and addition and subtraction. We will also be learning about length and perimeter and multiplication and division as we progress into the second half term. There will be a real focus on learning the timestables up to 12x12 and being able to recall them confidently.

In Science, we will be learning about two different topics in the Autumn term. The first topic is called ‘In a State’ and we will be exploring material properties and learning about solids, liquids and gases. In the second half term, we will be learning about electricity during our Switched On topic.

History/ Geography

Our thought provoking topic question will enable use to dive into an ancient world as we learn all about the Ancient Egyptians. We will be exploring who were the Ancient Egyptians and when they were around as well as what life was like for them. Also, we will be learning about mummification and Egyptian Gods. We will also be getting the atlases out to discover more about Egypt's physical and human features.

Our computing work will, as always, involve work around E-Safety and knowing how to stay safe online. Our main focus will be Coding and using Spreadsheets. We will be using Purple Mash to support the Computing curriculum.

During circle time every week, we will get together across Lower Key Stage 2 to discuss events in the news as well as other things that directly impact us.

In our Art and DT lessons, we will be focussing on the Ancient Egyptians where we will be creating Egyptian portraits and designing and making Egyptian burial masks. In the second half term, we will be applying our Science knowledge to create an electrical game!

PE will be on a Wednesday afternoon. We will be kicking off the Autumn term with Mr Saleh developing our skills and participating in competitive games.

We will be participating in RE theme days where we will be learning about Hinduism and the Nativity Story.

Remember to read at home as much as you can, and get your diary signed. Each time you get your diary signed you will earn star stamps! Everyone who reads at least 4 times a week will get a prize! You can read any book, not just your school reading book!

Every Friday Leopard's will have two pieces of homework to complete. They are expected to complete their homework for the following Friday. Please do your best to support and encourage your child with their schoolwork.

Spellings are given out every week and we will have our quiz on Friday’s. Our latest spelling booklet is below.

Terrific Tables!

This year, we will be working especially hard to learn and recall all of the times tables (up to 12x). Please support your child by practising these at home. Being able to recall their times tables quickly, can really help your child when calculating and it is an important life skill.

If you would like to have a chat or pass on any information please feel free to come into class, I will be more than happy to see you. For a lengthier chat please arrange an after school appointment.

This term is going to be very busy but I'm looking forward to having lots of fun as well!
