Leopards Y4

Welcome to Leopards!

Year 4

Miss McBride is the class teacher and Mrs Brewer is our fabulous teaching assistant.

We are all looking forward to a really exciting Spring Term.

During this term, we will attempt to answer the question

'Will Rainforests survive the 21st Century?'

Our English work in the first half term will be based around the narrative ‘The Explorer' by Katherine Rundell. We will use Talk for Writing to help us write a setting description and poems. During the second half term, our focus will be on non-fiction writing.  We will be applying our knowledge of deforestation and the rainforest to write a series of persuasive pieces. We will continue to have a strong focus on handwriting, spelling, grammar and punctuation throughout the term

In Guided Reading, we will be focusing on developing our reading skills and linking this with answering questions about a text. We will also be developing our inference skills - using clues to help us answer questions. To begin the Spring term, we will be reading a range of different poems and in the second half-term, we will be exploring non-fiction texts in more detail.

This term, we will be focusing on multiplication and division methods. We will apply our multiplication knowledge and skill-set in the second half-term as we will be learning about Area and Fractions. Like the Autumn term, there will be a real focus on learning the timestables up to 12x12 and being able to recall them confidently.

In Science, we will be learning about three different topics in the Spring term. Our first topic is called ‘Our Changing World’ and we will be exploring how trees and plants are identified and classified. Our second topic of the half term is called ‘Who Am I?’ and we will be learning about vertebrates and invertebrates.  In the second half term, we will be learning about the impact of humans on our environment

Our thought provoking topic question this term will enable us to think about our changing world and the impact humans are having. We will be using digital mapping and atlases to locate continents, countries and capital cities. We will be learning about the rainforest and the animals that live there. As we progress into the second half term, we will be focussing on deforestation and how the rainforests are used.

Our computing work will, as always, involve work around E-Safety and knowing how to stay safe online. Our main focus will be ‘Writing for Different Audiences’. We will be using Purple Mash to support the Computing curriculum.

During circle time every week, we will get together across Lower Key Stage 2 to discuss events in the news as well as other things that directly impact us.

In our Art lessons, we will be learning about Henri Rousseau, and we will be replicating some of his rainforest inspired artwork. As part of our DT work, we will be utilising our electricity science knowledge as we will be creating an electrical game.

PE will be on a Wednesday afternoon and we will be kicking off the Spring term with Mr Saleh.

We will be having RE days where we will be learning about The Bible and Food and Fasting.

Remember to read at home as much as you can, and get your diary signed. Each time you get your diary signed you will earn star stamps! Everyone who reads at least 4 times a week will get a prize! You can read any book, not just your school reading book!

Every Friday Leopard's will have two pieces of homework to complete. They are expected to complete their homework for the following Friday. Please do your best to support and encourage your child with their schoolwork.

Spellings are given out every week and we will have our quiz on Friday’s. Our latest spelling booklet is below.

Terrific Tables!

This year, we will be working especially hard to learn and recall all of the times tables (up to 12x). Please support your child by practising these at home. Being able to recall their times tables quickly, can really help your child when calculating and it is an important life skill.

If you would like to have a chat or pass on any information please feel free to come into class, I will be more than happy to see you. For a lengthier chat please arrange an after school appointment.

This term is going to be very busy but I'm looking forward to having lots of fun as well!
