Starfish Y2

Welcome to Starfish!

Miss McBride is our teacher and Mrs Hollywood is our fabulous teaching assistant!

Our PE days are Monday and Tuesday. Please remember to bring your PE kit on Monday morning and take it home after school on Tuesday.

We are looking forward to a very exciting Autumn term!

Our topic question this term is:

‘Would you rather live in Mansfield or Mombasa?’

In this geography based topic, we will be using maps, atlases and globes to locate Mansfield and Mombasa as well as looking at how our world is divided up into continents and hemispheres. We are also going to be identifying the physical and human features of these places as well as researching them. We will then be deciding where we want to live: Mansfield and Mombasa?

We will start the term by reading Meerkat Mail and using this text to support our writing. We will be writing a postcard to Sunny to tell him all about Mansfield. We will also be using Flat Stanley as a stimulus for our writing in the first half term. In the second half term, we will be writing a non-fiction text linked to our topic and some poetry. As always, we will be using Rainbow Grammar and focussing on spelling and handwriting throughout everything we do.

Our first text this term is Lila and the Secret of Rain. We are studying this text, looking closely at the vocabulary used as well as developing our comprehension skills.

Our maths topics this term are place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and money. We will be doing lots of practical activities to support our learning. We will be making sure we have a solid understanding of 2 digit numbers. Also, we will be practising counting in different multiples and beginning to learn our 5 and 10 times tables.

In the first half term, we are learning all about habitats; what habitats are, life processes and what is in our habitat. We will also be learning about staying healthy and growing up.

Our art this term is based on our topic. We will be looking at African patterns and creating our own using tiles.

For RE in the first half term, our topic is Rules and Routines where we will be looking at rules and routines from different religions, including the Ten Commandments. Our second half term topic is Light and Dark.

We are very lucky to have outside providers for PE this term. On Monday’s we will be doing dance with Miss Holly and Tuesday’s is Multi Skills with Mr Richards.

Homework will be set on Seesaw every Friday to be completed for the following Friday. Please make sure you check every week. The children have been given their log in details but if you need these again, please ask.

Reading at home

Reading is so important! We love reading in Starfish. Children choose their own reading books at least once a week. They will have a coloured book band book. Every time you read at home, you will get a Star Stamp! We expect you to read at home at least 3 times a week.

Spellings will be sent out every Friday and tested the following Friday. They will be stuck in the children's reading diaries. The words will link to the phonics or spelling rules we have been learning in school each week, as well as some Year 1 and Year 2 common exception words.

If you have any questions or would like to speak to me, please get in touch either by the school office or make an appointment with me when you see me on  the door before or after school.

We are going to have a fantastic year this year! It'll be hard work but lots of fun!
