Welcome to Starfish!
Miss McBride is our teacher and Mrs Hollywood is our fabulous teaching assistant!
Our PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. Please remember to bring your PE kit on Tuesday morning and take it home after school on Wednesday.
We are looking forward to a very exciting Spring term!
Our topic question this term is:
‘Who was the greatest explorer: Neil Armstrong or Christopher Columbus?'
In this history based topic, we will be learning all about two of the greatest explorers; Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus. We will be learning about why they are still remembered today as well as what they discovered. We will be looking at the two men's achievements and why they are significant.
We will start the term by reading Man on the Moon and using this text to help us write a diary entry. We will be looking at fronted adverbials and the features of a diary to help us. We will then do some work based on Dr Xargle's book of Earthlets. For this text, we are aiming to write instructions. We will be looking at the layout and grammatical features of instructions. As always, we will be using Rainbow Grammar and focussing on spelling and handwriting throughout everything we do.
We will be looking at a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts this term to help us develop our comprehension skills. We will focus on a different area of Vipers each lesson.
Our maths topics this term are multiplication & division, statistics, properties of shape and statistics. We will be doing lots of practical activities to support our learning. Also, we will be practising counting in different multiples and learning our 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
This term, we are studying materials. We will be looking at the properties of different materials and why they are chosen to do a specific job. We will also be investigating different materials to see if we can change any of their properties before selecting the best to make certain inventions!
Our art this term is based on our topic. We will be creating sculptures of the planets and looking at some famous sculptors.
For RE in the first half term, our topic is Beginnings and Endings. We will be looking at how different religions celebrate beginnings and endings eg Christenings. We will then look at ceremonies in different religions for different reasons.
We are very lucky to have outside providers for PE this term. On Tuesday’s we will be doing football with Mr Saleh and Wednesday’s is Games Sense with Heather.
Homework will be set on Seesaw every Friday to be completed for the following Friday. Please make sure you check every week. The children have been given their log in details but if you need these again, please ask.
Reading at home
Reading is so important! We love reading in Starfish. Children choose their own reading books at least once a week. They will have a coloured book band book. Every time you read at home, you will get a Star Stamp! We expect you to read at home at least 3 times a week.
Spellings will be sent out every Friday and tested the following Friday. They will be stuck in the children's reading diaries. The words will link to the phonics or spelling rules we have been learning in school each week, as well as some Year 1 and Year 2 common exception words.
If you have any questions or would like to speak to me, please get in touch either by the school office or make an appointment with me when you see me on the door before or after school.
We are going to have a fantastic year this year! It'll be hard work but lots of fun!
