Toucans Y3

Year 3

Welcome to Toucans' Class Page

Mrs Cooper is the class teacher of Toucans.

Mrs Hawkins, Mrs Buckley and Miss Burton are our Teaching Assistants.

We are all looking forward to a really exciting Spring Term.

Our theme and thought provoking question for the Spring Term is:

What is the most natural powerful force on earth?

Please find below a description of all the amazing work we will be doing in our  action packed Spring Term.

Our English work in the first half term will be based around the narrative 'Escape From Pompeii.' We will use Talk for Writing to help us write a poem and a story ending.  During the second half term our focus will be on non-fiction writing and we will work on creating an information leaflet.  We will work on handwriting, spelling, grammar and punctuation throughout the term.

In guided reading we will be focusing on developing our reading skills and linking this with answering questions about a text. We will develop our use of close reading and learn how to understand the words written in context.

Our class books will be The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips and Varjak Paw

This term, we will learning about methods of multiplication and division  We will continue with our times-tables focus where we will practise chanting and learning the 3x, 4x and 8x tables. Please encourage the use of Times Tables Rock Stars at home and the BBC Super Movers activities on the BBC website.

During the second half term our focus will be on statistics, money and measures.

 We will cover two topics:

Rock Detectives and Power of Forces.

History / Geography

Our thought provoking question will allow us to cover lots of geographical issues. We will focus on describing and understanding key aspects of mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes in the world. Alongside this we will use maps, atlases, globes and digital / computer mapping to locate countries that have these features.

Our computing work will, as always, involve work around E-Safety and knowing how to stay safe online. Our other topics will be on improving typing skills and learning how to send emails. We will use Purple Mash to support the ICT curriculum.

During Circle Time, we will get together with children from lower key stage 2 to discuss issues in the news, as well as things that directly impact on us!

Art / DT

We will be designing and making 3D volcanoes during the first half term and watching them erupt!

The second half term will have a focus on the artist Hokusai. We will re-create his art work named - 'The Great Wave of Kanagawa.'

PE will be on a Tuesday with Mr Saleh (once swimming has finished) and swimming on a Friday afternoon at the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre.

Religious Education

Our first RE focus will be on food and fasting. Our  second focus will be on Judaism including main beliefs, festivals and the Holy Book.

Our music will be led by our scheme 'Charanga'. Our topic titles are 'Three Little Birds' and 'The Dragon Song.'

Visit: TBC

Homework comprising of two parts will be given out on a Friday and collected in the following Friday. Spellings also go home each week and the children are tested on a Friday. Reading is vital, not only is it a life skill, but it also provides the children with writing ideas. Please take time to read with your child at home regularly.

We are going to have an extremely busy and hard working term but I'm sure it will be lots of FUN!!

Mrs Cooper, Mrs Buckley, Mrs Hawkins and Miss Burton are very excited about the term ahead and we are very proud of the hard work and effort you put into your work daily.
