Welcome to Toucans' Class Page
Mrs Cooper is the class teacher of Toucans.
Mrs Hawkins, Mrs Buckley and Miss Burton are our Teaching Assistants.
We are all looking forward to a really exciting Autumn Term.
Our theme and thought provoking question for the Autumn Term is:
Did life change after the Battle of Britain?
Please find below a description of all the amazing work we will be doing in our action packed Autumn Term.
Our English work in the first half term will be based around the narratives 'Tin Forest' and 'The Lion and the Unicorn.' We will use Talk for Writing to help us write a setting description and a letter. During the second half term our focus will be on non-fiction writing and we will focus on newspaper reports and poetry. We will work on handwriting, spelling, grammar and punctuation throughout the term.
In guided reading we will be focusing on developing our reading skills and linking this with answering questions about a text. We will develop our use of close reading and learn how to understand the words written in context.
Our class book will be The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips.
This term, we will learning about the place value of number, methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division We will continue with our times-tables focus where we will practise chanting and learning the 3x, 4x and 8x tables. Please encourage the use of Times Tables Rock Stars at home and the BBC Super Movers activities on the BBC website.
We will cover two topics:
Our Changing World and Our Amazing Bodies.
History / Geography
Our thought provoking question will allow us to cover lots of historical and geographical issues. We will focus on what World War II was and where and when it took place. We will learn about the Battle of Britain and the changes this brought about and the effects of Air raids and causes of evacuation. Alongside this, we will use maps and atlases to identify places affected by the war including cities and counties.
Our computing work will, as always, involve work around E-Safety and knowing how to stay safe online. Our other focus will be on coding - this will involve designing and de-bugging computer programs. We will use Purple Mash to support the ICT curriculum.
During Circle Time, we will get together with children from lower key stage 2 to discuss issues in the news, as well as things that directly impact on us!
Art / DT
We will be colour mixing and using techniques to blend pastels. We will improve our cutting accuracy to create silhouettes on black paper. In D/T we will focus on healthy eating and design and make a meal linked with rationing in WWII.
PE will be on a Tuesday with Mr Saleh and swimming on a Friday afternoon at the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre.
Our RE focus will be on the faith of Hinduism. We will learn about main beliefs, special places and festivals and the Holy Book.
Our music will be led by our scheme 'Charanga'. Our topic titles are 'All about me' and 'Games and Songs.'
Visit: WWII day at Mansfield Museum.
We also visit St Augustine's Church and take part in an annual Carol Service.
Homework comprising of two parts will be given out on a Friday and collected in the following Friday. Spellings also go home each week and the children are tested on a Friday. Reading is vital, not only is it a life skill, but it also provides the children with writing ideas. Please take time to read with your child at home regularly.
We are going to have an extremely busy and hard working term but I'm sure it will be lots of FUN!!
Mrs Cooper, Mrs Hawkins, Mrs Buckley and Miss Burton are very excited about the term ahead and we are very proud of the hard work and effort you put into your work daily.
