Robins' Class Summer Term

Mrs Campbell-Short is the class teacher in Robins. Additionally, Mrs Cheetham and Miss Moore provide some cover. The teaching assistants in Robins are Miss Allwood, Mrs Marples and Miss Blake. Mrs Campbell-Short loves teaching in Nursery and enjoys spending her days playing and having adventures with all the children. Mrs Campbell-Short’s favourite lesson is Nature Detectives as she loves exploring the outdoor world and seeing how it changes throughout the seasons. In Robins, PE is on Thursdays and all Robins need to come to school in their school PE kit. Nature Detectives is on a Friday. Please remember to bring suitable outdoor clothing as we go out in all weathers.

This term, Miss Allwood is looking forward to settling our new Robins into nursery and learning all about our new topic 'Down of the Farm' and 'People Who Help Us'. Miss Blake is also really looking forward to spending more time with all of our Robins.

Our topics this term are 'Down on the Farm' and 'People Who Help Us'.  Through these themes, children will explore the world around them, learning about animals, life on a farm, and the important roles people play in helping our communities.

Children will enjoy a range of hands-on experiences, stories, and role play activities, giving them opportunities to develop their language, imagination and understanding of the world. They will learn about how food is produced, the care of animals, and the different jobs that keep us safe, healthy and supported. Through play and adult-led activities, children will build confidence, develop social skills, and begin to make links between their own experiences and the wider world.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Throughout the term, children will be supported to develop their understanding of their own feelings through consistent adult guidance and the use of the Zones of Regulation. We will focus on building strong, warm and supportive relationships between children and staff, helping every child to feel safe, valued and confident. Children will be encouraged to become more independent as they explore the classroom environment and self-select activities that interest them. We will also support them in developing important life skills, such as managing their own personal needs including toileting and getting a drink. In addition, children will be guided through supported interactions with their peers, learning how to communicate effectively, share, and resolve conflicts in a positive way.

Communication and Language

In our setting, supporting children’s communication and language development is a key priority. Each day, children take part in dedicated ‘Communication and Interaction Time’ to help build their understanding and use of language in a meaningful way. They enjoy listening to high-quality stories during daily story sessions, alongside regular singing and rhyme activities that promote listening skills, vocabulary and memory. Children are fully immersed in a rich language environment where they are encouraged to explore words, express ideas and develop confidence in their communication. Through opportunities for conversation, storytelling and role play—carefully supported by adults—children learn to share their thoughts and engage with others. We also include regular ‘Mr Tongue’ sessions to strengthen tongue movement and dexterity, supporting clear speech development in a fun and engaging way.

Physical Development

Children will be supported to develop their physical skills in a fun and active way. They will practise moving in a variety of ways, including walking, running, hopping, crawling and sliding, with increasing control and coordination. Children will also learn to become more aware of obstacles in their environment and how to move around them safely and confidently. Daily use of the outdoor area will provide regular opportunities to develop balance and agility, while weekly sessions using larger play equipment as part of our Nature Detectives programme will further support their gross motor development. In addition, children will have ongoing access to a range of fine motor resources, such as scissors, writing tools, play dough equipment and scoopers, helping to strengthen the small muscles needed for tasks like writing and self-care.

Literacy

We will help children develop their love of stories and early literacy through daily story sessions and a wide range of engaging texts, including non-fiction. They will be encouraged to join in with repeated phrases and begin to predict what might happen next. Daily singing will help them become familiar with nursery rhymes, supporting language and memory. Children will also have access to a well-resourced writing area to practise mark making, and an inviting story corner with books, puppets and resources to inspire storytelling and imagination.

Maths

In numeracy, children will begin to develop early maths skills through daily ‘Cool Count’ sessions and discussions about how many children are present or absent. They will be encouraged to recognise numerals in their environment and use a well-resourced maths area with items such as counters, dice and numicon. Children will also explore patterns, both indoors and outdoors, and begin to recreate these themselves while developing their use of key mathematical language.
