Mrs Gurrie is our teacher for part of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Our topic this term is ‘How the world works.’ During this term, the children will learn all about jobs that different people do. We will start by thinking all about farmers and what it is like to work on a farm. We will use our trip to Matlock Farm Park to see all of this in action and start to think about how it is different to the town of Mansfield. We will then move on to learning about different occupations such as builders, police, doctors and dentists. This will really give us opportunities to think about the world outside our school.
Communication and Language
Throughout the term, we will be supported to learn and develop our spoken language along with our listening and understanding. We will begin to answer 'how' and 'why' questions and also do this when discussing the texts we are reading. Will continue to develop our conversational language and begin to turn taking when speaking. .
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
We will be supported to develop important skills to lead happy and healthy lives. These include, forming and maintaining friendships, managing impulses and big feelings and checking in on those feelings on a daily basis by learning how to use Zones of Regulation which is used throughout school. We will continue to develop our understanding of the school rules and understand why it's important to have and follow these rules. We will also think about what a healthy lifestyle is and what contributes to it. In the second half of the term, we will also discuss road safety. .
Physical Development
We will have opportunities to develop our gross and fine motor skills. We will participate in weekly PE sessions lead by a trained Coach, this term we will dance with Coach Lauren. We will develop our coordination and balancing skills, along with learning simple routines to music. In our continuous provision, we will have opportunities to develop our pencil grip, use scissors correctly and safely and begin to write recognisable letters. We will also use a range of tools which support our fine motor skills.
Literacy - Drawing Club and Supersonic Phonic Friends
During this term, we will develop our reading, writing and comprehension skills through comprehensive phonic sessions following the Supersonic Phonic Friends scheme, a daily reading session, reading with an adult 1:1 once a week and high-quality reading and writing resources in our continuous provision. We will also be taking part in Drawing Club, which allows us to use a short story, traditional tale or cartoon/animation to draw their own ideas and write code words/sentences to make our own versions. .
We will also spend time reading a range of books from our ‘Author of the Term’. This term we will be focusing on Julia Donaldson and her huge range of children’s story books.
Maths
In maths, we will be developing our understanding of numbers, numerical patterns and shape, space and measures. We will be doing this through counting sessions, weekly maths challenges and high-quality maths resources in our continuous provision. We will be focusing on really solidifying our numbers to 10 but also moving on to numbers to 20 and beyond. We will be looking at patterns in our number system that will help us with this. We will also spend time learning all about 3D shapes, how they are constructed using 2D shapes and where they can be seen in our environment. We will also spend time thinking about mathematical language through position and maps such as next to, in between or above.
Understanding of the World
To begin with we will learn about the life cycle of a butterfly. We will learn about the sequence of its life cycle and then move onto observe the changes of a caterpillar. Along with learning these facts, we will recognise the changes in our natural world and draw pictures of the caterpillars changes over time. We will also look at how turnips are grown and what the inside of a vegetable looks like.
Each week, we will participate in Nature Detective sessions. This will involve us searching for caterpillars and butterflies to observe where they live. We will then make a butterfly feeder outside to support them. We will also be looking at changes outside and where we could grow vegetables in school or would somewhere else be more suitable? Finally, we will be planting cress to take home over half term. To support our learning, we will be going on a school trip to Matlock Farm Park.
Expressive Arts and Design
Throughout the term, we will develop our artistic and imaginative skills through weekly mini makers sessions. We will explore a range of mediums and develop understanding of construction, textures and design. We will have opportunities to mix colours for a desired purpose, use vegetables to experiment with and design a face, make vegetable soup and construct a variety of different items for a range of different purposes. Both indoor and outdoor provision will have role play areas to further our imagination and a music area where we can play musical instruments, develop our singing skills and perform to our hearts content.
