We hope you have a lovely Summer break and we look forward to seeing the children on Thursday 2nd September.

Tigers Y5

Welcome to Terrific Team Tiger!

Our teacher in Miss Smith and we’re very lucky this year as Miss Parker our brilliant teaching assistant.

We hope you enjoy reading about all our exciting plans for the term!

Is water a superhero?

Our Summer topic is centered around geography and we will be focusing on water, rivers and water cycles. We’ll be putting this into the wider context of the world and using maps to revisit the 7 continents, 5 oceans and where they are in the world. We will also explore our local area using maps and six figure grid references.

A lot of our English writing and reading this term will be inspired by our topic. We’ll be revisiting lots of different skills and learning some more throughout lots of engaging pieces of writing including poetry, newspaper reports and some more creative pieces.

As we have made the jump to upper key stage two it’s important that our expectations and level of challenge have increased too. We will be using a wide range of texts to develop retrieval, inference and prediction skills with a huge focus on vocabulary. To compliment our topic we will be reading the lovely ‘White Dolphin’ by Gill Lewis and using ‘The Watertower’ by Gary Crew which is a fantastic picture book for older readers in our lessons.

We love maths in year 5! This half term will be all about checking in with what we have covered already and recapping the most crucial strands of our mathematical understanding in place value, the 4 operations and fractions. This will strengthen our mathematical knowledge all allow us to develop our reasoning and problem solving skills within the mathematics curriculum.

As well as being reminded of the importance of e-safety online, we will continue to work on our digital literacy and our focus will be using purple mash to explore 3D modelling and concept maps.

Art and DT

We are very excited about our Art/DT project this half term. We will begin by learning about the style of Alfred Wallis and working on our own projects using his artwork as our inspiration.

In the summer term we will be using the RE skills developed in our Bible Explorers workshops to answer some big questions and consider how religious beliefs can impact the everyday lives of people. We will be focusing on the beliefs of the Islamic and Hindu faith.

This term we will be continuing to have a PE session a week with our lovely sports coach Heather.

We are also lucky enough to have another PE session with Mr Saleh! We will be developing our football skills and applying them in games.

This half term we will be investigating life cycles of different members of the animal kingdom such as mammals, amphibians and birds. We will also consider the part that humans play in the life cycle of these animals and how we can help or hinder their existence.

Weekly homework and spellings will always be on Seesaw. Please encourage your child to practise their spellings, complete their homework and read at least 3 times a week in line with our home/school agreement.
