Welcome to Terrific Team Tiger!
Our teacher in Miss Smith and we’re very lucky this year as Miss Parker our brilliant teaching assistant.
We hope you enjoy reading about all our exciting plans for the term!
Who were the braver: The Anglo-Saxons, The Vikings or The Scots?
Our Autumn topic is all about different invaders and how they invaded/defended England. Throughout the half term we will we learning about and comparing how they all lived, how they fought and who eventually came out on top.
A lot of our English writing and reading this term will be inspired by our topic. We’ll be revisiting lots of different skills and learning some more throughout lots of engaging pieces of writing including descriptions, stories and some non-fiction texts.
As we have made the jump to upper key stage too it’s important that our expectations and level of challenge have increased too. We will be using a wide range of texts to develop retrieval, inference and prediction skills with a huge focus on vocabulary. To compliment our topic we will be reading ‘Viking Boy’ which is a fantastic novel by Tony Bradman. It’s the story of how Gunnar’s world is turned upside down and how he swears a blood oath to avenge his family.
We love maths in year 5. We will begin the year by focusing on place value to ensure that we have a thorough understanding of number. The four operations will follow, ensuring all children have developed key skills for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Finally, we will move onto measurement and finish the half term with some perimeter and area learning.
This term will focus heavily on E-Safety and developing our digital literacy skills. We will also be following on from our year 4 coding work, programming and debugging.
Art and DT
This term’s Art and DT are very exciting. Again, we will use Vikings as our inspiration to create water colour seascapes and collages. We will also be practicing our sketching throughout the topic.
We are very lucky to have Bible Explorers back in year 5 this year. We are very excited to learn more through the stories and using our hand signals.
This term we are lucky to be learning the rules and skills required for handball from the lovely sports coach Heather.
This term is all about ‘Getting Sorted!’ We will focus on developing skills in scientific enquiry through a materials focus. We will also be undertaking lots of comparative tests to sort a range of materials and answering some big questions such as ‘how solid is a solid?’
Weekly homework and spellings will always be on Seesaw. Please encourage your child to practise their spellings, complete their homework and read at least 3 times a week in line with our home/school agreement.
