Implementation

The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design curriculum at Crescent Primary School follows a scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum and is taught as part of the children’s termly topic work. Areas covered include: Year 1: Mark Making, Self-Portraits, Colour Creations. Year 2: Yayoi Kusama, Earth Art, Henry Rousseau. Year 3: William Morris, Famous Buildings, Seurat and Pointillism. Year 4: Plant Art, Sonia Delaunay, Recycled Art. Year 5: Chinese Art, Frida Kahlo, Express Yourself. Year 6: Landscape Art, Sculpturing vases, Street Art. Each art project is designed around investigating the work of a famous artists; the children use this as inspiration to create their own pieces of artwork by ‘Creating Connections’. Connections are also made with our computing curriculum to compare digital and physical art. The children practice different artistic skills and document their final product inside of their art books or photographed on Seesaw. Art and Design is taught through planned, purposeful play and through a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activities in the EYFS and embedded throughout different aspects of learning. Children explore the texture, movement, feel and look of different media and materials and begin to explore colour. They use simple tools appropriately and for an intended purpose.
